‘To generate new opportunities for young people through art and culture by offering mentoring and access to further socialization and professional skills’

ABOUT US

ARebeldia Cultural Association is based in Alto Vera Cruz, a community located in a suburban area in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Known for its low-income population, poor housing and educational conditions, Alto Vera Cruz has a population of over 30 thousands people.

In 2009, one if its local artist, Flávio Renegado alongside his cultural producer, Danusa Carvalho, founded ARebeldia which aims to encourage and foster the community’s participation and formation through arts and cultural projects.

ARebeldia believe that social transformation comes through individual development, followed by territorial development and also through the paths of Occupation - Recognition - Appropriation - Transformation.  All of these concepts are included in the methods we use to plan our actions.

Occupations: ARebeldia parts from the concept of Local Occupation, be it through already installed equipment and institutions or through new establishments in the surrounding territory.

Recognition: Every community is built upon individual, collective or community resources. It is very important that this social fabric is valued and recognized by the institution and by the community themself so inhabitants can understand its history and Resiliently define the paths that will follow.

Appropriation: recognize and take responsibility of the community individual patrimony is the first condition for the development of protagonism.

Transformation: is a result from the process of occupation, recognition and appropriation ensuring significant improvements in collective and individual quality of life indicators.

In 2015, ARebeldia’s activities were recognized and the association was awarded the title of Municipal, State and Federal Public Utility. In 2016 the refurbishment of our temporary headquarters was completed. Our aim now is to raise enough funds for a new four-story building completed with 8 classrooms, physical and digital library, theatre/auditorium with a 120 seat capacity, backstage and warehouse. The project was design and given to us by the renowned Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld, making this his first social building.
